However, the management practices that are utilized by farmers not only need to efficiently provide nutrients to plants in a profitable way, but also minimize any potential for negative environmental impacts.
Dr. Adrian Johnston, former Vice President, Africa and Asia at the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), discusses the need for Best Management Practices (BMP) and the use of 4R Nutrient Stewardship in this article. When the 4Rs – Right Source, Right Time, Right Place, Right Rate – are considered together, for a specific location and crop, farmers can expect productivity and profitability with minimal environmental impact.
