Corn Field in frost.
Cristie Preston, Ph.D.

Many farmers may be concerned with frost damage this fall, considering the late planted corn crop across much of the Midwest. So, what impact does frost damage have on corn yield?

Late-season frost can have a negative impact on grain yield and quality depending on the level of maturity. The table below outlines the potential percent corn yield loss due to a killing and light frost. As maturity progresses, the potential for yield losses decrease. Early frost before corn reaches maturity can affect the dry down time for grain. Some studies have shown four to nine additional days.
