Starter by definition is applying fertilizer with or near the seed, usually during planting for the purpose of accelerating early growth of the crop. Most starter fertilizer applications include immobile nutrients like phosphorus for that very reason: phosphorus is immobile in soil. Conditions that warrant starter applications include crops planted during cooler seasons, historical deficiency symptoms, or crop rotation. Even if soil test samples show levels above critical values, some crops can still show some benefit from starter application. These benefits can include more uniform germination, early growth, less time to maturity and grain dry down, and ultimately, increased yield. More recently, depending on the crop, starter applications have shown some benefit with the inclusion of nitrogen, potassium, and sulfur.
